On the subject of a dry (booze free) month our first thought was for a classic mojito, sans alcohol. We were also recommended to look into the lemon and basil spritzer, a wonderful pairing of flavours for a mocktail and in keeping with our recurring them of herbs for health.
For those who might want to enjoy and alcoholic version, there is a gin based version to enjoy!
The Recipe
For 1 tall glass of you will need 1 lemon (halved), a half dozen or so basil leaves, 1 or 2 teaspoons of fine sugar (white or brown, or a simple syrup or sweetener of your choice) and soda water.
Start with the Basil Leaves and Sugar
Put the mint leaves in the bottom of a tall glass. Add a splash of soda and the sugar.
Muddle
Use the back or handle of a spoon to muddle (smash) the basil and sugar together. This helps to dissolve the sugar and infuse the flavours.
Squeeze in the Lime
Squeeze the juice from the lemon halves into the mix.
Add the Ice
Don't overfill the glass with ice.
Top with Soda
Top off the glass with soda. Leave space at the top for stirring.
Stir and Enjoy
Gently stir the ingredients together to mix the flavours. For added style, add a basil top as a garnish.
Ok, if you want the version with gin, this video goes into a little more detail. Alternatively before adding the soda, pour a shot of gin over the ice and basil mixture.
With alcohol or without, enjoy the flavours of basil and lemon for a summer vibe. If you want to have a chat about healthier living, cutting back on the booze, beating stress or following the doctor's advice, we can help.
